What Is the MPRE Exam?

Do You Need To Pass the MPRE To Take the Bar?
Passing the MPRE is required for most U.S. jurisdictions before you can take the bar exam. Exceptions include Wisconsin and Puerto Rico, where the MPRE is not mandatory. Some states, like Connecticut and New Jersey, accept completion of a professional responsibility course instead.
Each state sets its own passing MPRE score, but most require at least an 80. Be sure to check the specific requirements for your jurisdiction during MPRE registration to ensure you’re on track for admission to the bar.
How Long Is the MPRE?
The MPRE is a 2-hour, 60-question multiple choice exam administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). Fifty of these questions are scored, while 10 are unscored pretest questions, but since the pretest questions are indistinguishable from the rest, you should answer all of them.
The test is designed with about two minutes per question, and there are no penalties for incorrect answers.
Administered at Pearson VUE testing centers, the MPRE is scored on a scaled score ranging from 50 to 150.
MPRE vs. MBE
The multistate bar exam (MBE) tests a much broader range of legal topics over two days, while the MPRE focuses specifically on professional responsibility and ethics. For this reason, most law students agree that the MPRE is much easier.
Rather than focusing on legal principles like Constitutional Law or Evidence, the MPRE exam is based on the American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Judicial Conduct.
