What Is the MPRE?

You probably have a host of reasons for wanting to become a lawyer. Maybe you’re carrying on a family tradition or excited to work inside of a courtroom every day. But if you’re like most law students, your career goals are rooted in a strong sense of justice.

That sense of justice is closely tied to ethics. Lawyers are entrusted with incredible responsibility—whether it’s protecting clients’ rights or upholding the legal system.

Understanding and adhering to ethical standards isn’t just a requirement; it’s essential to maintaining the trust and integrity that the legal profession depends on. This is why the MPRE plays such a vital role in your journey to becoming a lawyer—it ensures you’re prepared to navigate the ethical challenges you’ll face in practice.

What Is the MPRE Exam?

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is a unique test that’s designed to assess your knowledge of ethics and professional responsibility as a future lawyer.

The test is not about your personal morals—instead, the MPRE tests how well you can understand and apply the standards set for legal professionals.

Lawyers hold a position of immense responsibility and trust, so your adherence to ethical standards is essential. The MPRE ensures that you’re prepared to navigate the ethical dilemmas you’ll face in practice.

Knowing the rules and responsibilities that come with being an attorney is crucial for protecting your clients and the integrity of the legal system.

Do You Need To Pass the MPRE To Take the Bar?

Passing the MPRE is required for most U.S. jurisdictions before you can take the bar exam. Exceptions include Wisconsin and Puerto Rico, where the MPRE is not mandatory. Some states, like Connecticut and New Jersey, accept completion of a professional responsibility course instead.

Each state sets its own passing MPRE score, but most require at least an 80. Be sure to check the specific requirements for your jurisdiction during MPRE registration to ensure you’re on track for admission to the bar.

How Long Is the MPRE?

The MPRE is a 2-hour, 60-question multiple choice exam administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). Fifty of these questions are scored, while 10 are unscored pretest questions, but since the pretest questions are indistinguishable from the rest, you should answer all of them.

The test is designed with about two minutes per question, and there are no penalties for incorrect answers.

Administered at Pearson VUE testing centers, the MPRE is scored on a scaled score ranging from 50 to 150.

MPRE vs. MBE

The multistate bar exam (MBE) tests a much broader range of legal topics over two days, while the MPRE focuses specifically on professional responsibility and ethics. For this reason, most law students agree that the MPRE is much easier.

Rather than focusing on legal principles like Constitutional Law or Evidence, the MPRE exam is based on the American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Judicial Conduct.

Topics covered by the MPRE include:

  • The client/lawyer relationship
  • Conflicts of interest
  • Litigation and advocacy
  • Client confidentiality
  • Legal malpractice
  • Safekeeping funds
  • Judicial conduct
