We are thrilled to share the remarkable results of the February 2025 California Bar Exam, as announced by the State Bar of California.

Record-Breaking Pass Rates

The February 2025 General Bar Examination (GBX) achieved a pass rate of 55.9%, the highest spring pass rate since 1965. The one-day Attorneys' Examination recorded a pass rate of 76.5%, the highest since February 1992. These results highlight the dedication and hard work of the exam takers.

Exam Details and Performance

The two-day GBX consists of three sections: a 200-item multiple-choice examination, five essay questions, and a performance test. The mean adjusted scaled MCQ score in California was 1393, a significant improvement from the previous year's score of 1327.

First-Time and Repeat Takers

Of the 3,886 applicants who completed the GBX, 29.9% were first-time exam takers, with a pass rate of 62.1%. Repeat takers had a pass rate of 53.2%, showcasing the perseverance of all exam takers.

Law School Performance

Pass rates varied by law school type, with ABA-accredited schools in California and out-of-state showing strong results. First-time takers from ABA-accredited California schools had a pass rate of 77.4%, while out-of-state ABA-accredited schools had a pass rate of 72.9%. CBE-accredited and unaccredited schools also demonstrated notable performances.

Addressing the Multiple-Choice Section Error

An error in the multiple-choice section affected the scoring of several questions. The State Bar of California petitioned the California Supreme Court for a scoring adjustment, which was approved. (See State Bar Announces February 2025 Bar Exam Results).

Despite this correction, many applicants expressed concerns about the new online system, forced use of whiteboards, test site connection difficulties, and other issues raised at the January 2025 State Bar meeting.
